Johannesburg, RPA

Johannesburg.

Johannesburg. A city that denies the clichee of poor Africa. Built literally on gold and diamonds. The wealth and splendour that you don’t quite expect there, is even more striking. It is, however, still Africa. Showing off with your expensive cellphone on the street is not recommended. You are very likely to loose it. Along with your arm. A true marriage of wild Africa and the rich West.

Pomnik górnika. Wielkość adekwatna do roli, jaką ten zawód odegrał w powstaniu metropolii.

A miner monument. Its size is adequate to the role this profession played in the development of the city.

Na przedmieściach taki widok nie był rzadkością.

You can see lots of sights like this in the suburbs.

Wszystkie domy prywatne ogrodzone są wysokimi murami i zasiekami. Jest to konieczne. Przestępstwa, mimo iż coraz rzadsze, nadal są jednak w RPA plagą.

All private houses are secured with high concrete fences and entanglements. Out of necessity. Crimes, despite being more and more rare, are still a real plague in the Republic of South Africa.

These trees flourish only for 2 weeks a year. And I was lucky to visit Johannesburg when they do. The view of almost whole town in this colour was spectacular.

Centra Handlowe.

To w centrach handlowych ludzie spędzają wolny czas. To tu płynie życie towarzyskie. Z prostego powodu. W galeriach handlowych jest bezpiecznie. Na ulicach i w parkach – nie.

City malls. I haven’t seen them in such a great number in any other city I had visited. You leave one of them, you cross a street and you’re at the entrance to a next one. And their joint underground parkings stretch for miles.

It’s in the city malls where people spend their free time. This is also where social life flourishes. There are suprisingly few people on the streets or in the city parks. For a simple reason. It’s safe in city malls. On the streets or in the parks – it’s not.

Nowoczesna architektura i oryginalne kształty budynków to w Johannesburgu widok powszechny.

Modern architecture and original shapes of buildings are common view in Johannesburg.

City malls are so attractive inside that you don’t feel like leaving at all…

Indywidualistów, jak widać, również nie brakuje.

As you can see, there are some real individuals on the streets, as well.

W okresie poprzedzającym mistrzostwa świata w piłce nożnej w Johannesburgu budowało się naprawdę dużo. Żurawie były dosłownie wszędzie. Ten – w jednej z najbogatszych dzielnic – Melrose. Propagandowy tekst "Jutro należy do ludzi pracujących dziś" trąci mocno komuną, ale mądrości trudno mu odmówić…

There were really lots of construction sites in Johannesburg before the World Cup 2010. Cranes were simply everywhere. This one – in one of the richest districts – the Melrose. The propaganda sign "Tomorrow belongs to people who work for today" may seem somewhat communist, but it sure is wise.

Jeden z najdroższych hoteli w Johannesburgu. Melrose Arch Hotel. Ooops!

Melrose Arch Hotel. One of the most expensive hotels in whole Johannesburg. When a hotel guard noticed me taking photos, he literally chased me through a few square blocks to make sure I don’t photograph the hotel. Yaiks!

Dzielnica finansowa. Fantastyczne biurowce i fantastyczne wnętrza. Architekci muszą tam naprawdę nieźle zarabiać, bo pracę wykonują tam naprawdę świetną.

Financial district. Fantastic office buildings and fantastic interiors. The architects must earn real good money there, because the job they’re doing is just great!

Nelson Mandela cieszy się tam ogromnym poważaniem. Znów jakieś nawiązanie do socjalizmu?

Nelson Mandela is a very respected person with all those monuments, pictures and street names. Another similarity to the Russian socialism?

Hotel Mariott.

Mariott Hotel. Why don’t the European hotels look like this one?

A parking place at a mall at the suburbs of Johannesburg. If you happen to be in Johannesburg, it’s better to buy souvenirs in places like this. You can buy the same things as in downtown, but at a 5 times lower price.

Montecasino. Jedno z trzech największych kasyn w Johannesburgu. Prawdziwe miasto w mieście. Kilometry dróżek i tysiące automatów do gry. Robi to nieprawdopodobne wrażenie…

One of the three biggest casinos in Johannesburg. A true city inside a city. Kilometers od roads and thousands of gaming machines. Ceilings do not only look like skies. They look like skies at all times of day and night! It makes an increadible impression.

I coś na koniec. Strefa wolnocłowa na lotnisku w Johannesburgu i napis, który bardzo mi się spodobał: "Your last chance to see Johnnie, Jack & Jim". Na zdrowie!

And something for the end. Taxfree zone at Johannesburg airport and a sign that I really liked: "Your last chance to see Johnnie, Jack & Jim". Cheers!
